La Máquina: Nicaragua’s little-known waterfall and eco reserve |
|||||||
The most obvious reason to visit Centro Ecoturistico La Máquina is to relax in the cool, shaded canyon and dip your head under the powerful waterfalls of La Trinidad River. After spending several days or a week at the nearby beaches of Casares and La Boquita the tropical dry forest is a welcoming change. Explore the natural reserve by following trails that meander through 13 hectares of tropical dry forest and stop along the way to read placards that identify various native tree species, including some old stately giants. There’s also a bat cave and a lookout point known as Indio Desnudo, from which you can take in a view of the area and west to the Pacific Ocean. A small restaurant sits perched atop the falls and serves basic appetizers, meals, soft drinks, and beer. Cultural events take place here from time to time, including folkloric dances and El Güegüense, a famous play that reenacts indigenous resistance against the Spanish conquistadors. The majority of the reserve, 60 hectares to be exact, is set aside for regenerating the native forest that once encompassed this area, and wildlife is quickly settling into its new home: plenty of birds, lizards, snakes, and various mammals. The reserve is located halfway between Diriamba and Casares. From the beach, look for the entrance to your left at kilometer marker 58½. Entry is $1 or 20 colones and the reserve is open every day from 8am to 6pm. |
